The Youngest Templar: Keeper of the Grail by Michael Spradlin
A DANGEROUS QUEST...
When the Knights Templar ride through the Abbey on their way to battle, the orphan Tristan suddenly finds himself made squire to Sir Thomas. While being a squire is exciting, it is also dangerous, as Tristan gets caught between rival knights desperate for power and is entrusted with the most sacred relic - the Holy Grail. With the chaos of war around him, he teams up with some unlikely allies. But even with their help, can Tristan safely bring the Holy Grail back to England? Or will he succumb to the dangers of those who follow in its wake? (from back cover)

Ages: 11+
This book is AWESOME!!! OK, so it's not as good as Percy Jackson, but it's almost perfectly clean and has a really good story line and is very captivating. There is action, adventure, and swordplay for the boys and in addition to that, there is a little romance for the girls. Personally, I like all the action and adventure just as much as romance, but the little bit of love keeps things...interesting. :)
Things to consider:
Robard, one of Tristan's friends, is a rough guy who doesn't respect the king and always accompanies King Richard's name with spitting. He also frequently uses a-- which is writen with a Scottish accent so it isn't written a--. He also uses the Lord's name in vain several times.
There is a lot or warfare, bloodshed, and murder. However, this is all tastefully written so that it is not graphic or disgusting in any way. It is described but not in great detail.
Of course, being a story played off the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, there is a lot of reference to Christians, God, and holy relics.
The romance is clean, though apparent.
Personally, I really like this book. It's fairly clean, has a wonderful story line, and captivates audiences ages 11 to 111. KLIATT says, "This [book] is a winner!"
I can only agree.
Happy reading!
